The Epic Expert Carbon Mountain Bike by Specialized with Brain Technology
The Epic Expert from Specialized is a fast, lightweight 29″ cross-country bike that has been equipped with SRAM X01 Eagle 1×12-speed shifters, Level TL brakes and carbon wheels from Roval. The frame has a highly rigid rear triangle with 100 mm travel, a complex carbon fibre layup and a full carbon shock linkage, which ensures top handling. Brain Technology in the RockShox suspension fork and shock automatically adjusts the suspension characteristics so you can stay focused on the trail. Safe speed regulation is provided by 2-piston brakes that can be modulated perfectly. In addition, the handcrafted wheelset with 29 mm wide tubeless-ready rims increases stiffness and helps save weight.

FACT is an acronym for ” Functional Advanced Composite Technology” and summarises all the know-how that Specialized has in the use of carbon fibre. It is a holistic approach, which primarily concerns the bike frames, but is found in many components such as handlebars, stems, saddles etc. The starting point is always the awareness for the needs of riders and the capability to fulfil them. Next, the selection of fibres, resins and fabric layers takes place; in this process the quality of the carbon and the arrangement of the fibre layers play an important role. It is important to find the right set-up for the project at hand and the intended location or rather the area of application. It is often necessary to differentiate from model to model at several points. In the final step, attention is paid to processing the material in a way that allows the desired advantages in terms of low weight, rigidity and stability to be achieved.
Brain
The Specialized Brain Technology is a system for the automatic adjustment of the suspension characteristics of shocks and dampers and suspension fork. It will seamlessly switch between hard, tight and soft, active settings, depending on whether the terrain is flat or rough. The bike thinks for you so that you can concentrate entirely on the trail. The technology is based on an inertia valve that blocks the flow of oil when closed, but opens immediately when struck, allowing the suspension to engage. Brain naturally distinguishes between shocks from the ground and shocks from the pedal. In its current version, the system, which was first used in 2002, is more durable and requires less maintenance than ever before and also offers a wider, individually adjustable bandwidth between maximum tautness and maximum activity.
